“tastes, if you will—of the weird world of Edwardian and Progressive era food and diet culture. A culture that you’ll see has many similarities to now.” - ‼️
Is it human nature to swing like a pendulum, between excess and austerity? I wonder this aloud as I enter my lunch choices into the NOOM app following two months of enjoying every good thing set before me. I’m likely to find the genesis of a poem as I ponder it all on the way into my studio, far from the box of candy on my counter.
This was fascinating. I was not aware of this aspect of Edwardian culture. Everything old is new again. I'm also glad that you didn't include a recipe as I still have a few from the past months to try out.
Many in our billionaire class still equate money with virtue, intelligence, and morality, it seldom does.
This was fascinating. More! More! xo
I am awed by your writing, Marrisa. It is a delight to start 2024 off with your clever insights embedded in rich prose.
Oh, you made my week/month/etc with this comment. I truly appreciate it.
I love food and social history (especially together). Thanks for this tasty tidbit, it was very enjoyable!

Very fun idea, Marissa, and a welcome respite from all the holiday baking. My pants thank you.
I look forward to reading further dispatches.
My stretchy pants could only take so much themselves!

"Far from the Box of Candy" could be the new austerity version of "I Have Eaten the Plums." LOL. (And yes, methinks it is human nature.)
Yes! Perhaps the chocolates should be in the icebox where the plums used to be.

Wow! So relevant. More please. And also a recipe for bedside roast chicken.
I'm imagining the Ron Popiel Bedside Roaster!
Interesting times. Jenny Churchill, Winston’s Mom, was dining and more w the King. I like that Winston liked champagne.
"dining and more"
the most perfect and delicate description.
