I'll have to add Wales to the itinerary on a future trip—never enough time when I get to the UK. As for Welsh Cakes—they look intriguing. Will probably leave out the currents, though, to save myself the trouble of picking them out after baking.

You might as well leave them out. My currant-hating daugh would attest to the fact it was a lot of hassle to pick them out. LOL

My brother has made fun of my deconstruction of any baked goods containing currants, raisins, etc. It's nice to have confirmation from you (and your daughter)!

Thank you so much for this, Melissa! We ate these every day while backpacking around Wales a few years ago, traveling by bus and on foot, chasing my husband’s family history. There’s nothing better than sleeping upstairs from a Welsh pub and eating these cakes in the morning. I know what I’m making this weekend!! ❤️

What a great adventure to travel round Wales that way! Did you have a favorite place you stayed?

We loved Carmarthen and Swansea was fun. The Snowdonia mountains are gorgeous. We’d get off the bus and hike in to a little town trusting there would be a place to stay and were never disappointed. Everyone we met was so kind and eager to show us their favorite castles. Highly recommend!!

I just made these with pecans instead of raisins or currants. They are delicious and deliciously simple. Thank you!!

A staple treat when visiting my Dad's parents as a child (in Canada)! My grandmother was raised near the border of Wales and grandpa was Welsh. They emigrated to Canada in '48. Love them!!!

I've wanted to visit Wales since I read Sharon Kay Penman's historical novels about Llewelyn the Great more than 30 years ago. I haven't made it yet, but there's still time! Meanwhile, I'll make these delicious sounding yummies, pull out my tattered copy of Here Be Dragons & dream. Thank you.

Sounds like a great way to spend a rainy weekend. I haven't read those books, but now it sounds like I must.

Mum said your recipe is excellent. Best eaten warm with butter. I can’t attach a photo here sadly 😁

I should make these being a quarter Welsh myself. This weekend was all Greek for the other side of the family at our local Greek church festival.

I spent some time in Wales after running the Michigan State U. programs in London several years ago and loved the people, the land, the food. I've been teaching for years in Okinawa and have a Welsh friend here who is married to an Okinawan lady. He and I share a birthday, tho' he is 20 years younger than I This year I'll make him and his family Welsh Cakes for his BDay, thanks to your recipe!

Wales is magnificent and magical! My son went to University there and touring the countryside was one of my best experiences.

I have lots of very fond memories of Wales. Liked 6 months in Swansea when I was 5 and 6 months in Parkmill when I was 8. The Welsh cakes are definitely preferable to the Lava Bread!! I had a wonderful welsh accent when I got back to Australia as an 8 year old and sadly lost it quite fast. No, I could never speak/understand Welsh though we did learn some at Pennard Primary School

Can you conjure the Welsh accent up tho? It is such a lovely one.

Nope. Sadly it would just sound like an Aussie with slight US twang trying to sound Welsh
