Thank you! Hope the algorithm works on those potatoes.
My best advice comes from my beloved Mom. She was the queen of TG. And most other events as well.
Nothing went right. Her advice:
1. Do not tip orange juice pitcher into the floor register in kitchen.
2. On same topic, do not knock very full pitcher of egg nog into the open silverware drawer.
3. Yes, same day.
4. Defrosting turkey is a cinch. Water, add turkey. But you need the huge pot for the potatoes and the sink obviously won’t work while cooking (this is indeed TG day at this point) so clearly use bath tub, filled to brim with hot water.
5. Roll sleeves up first. Change clothes. Several times. Esp after the egg nog disaster.
6. Since turkey will float, you must need more water. Consider swimming pool. But too cold out there so back to tub. Just hold it down.
7. When you get bored, balance phone book on it. Duct tape as needed.
She had loads of great advice! We have photos!
Every event was basically minor chaos yet ultimately there was a delicious meal and lots of laughter. People adored her. That was her secret.
Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving. My only tip is to make sure that your turkey will fit into your oven. How do I know this? I have a 1940s Wedgewood gas stove (that I love), with a very tiny oven. I almost had to chop off the end of a 22-pound turkey to fit it inside. Also, that maple caramel apple upside down cake sounds amazing. I'll try it later as I'm already making Rose Levy Berenbaum's Best Apple Pie, which I swear by (rather than swearing at).
Happy Thanksgiving. I live alone but I get invited to my brother and sister-in-law's home for dinner, along with one or two of their children, grandchildren and a young pug who thinks we all came over to pet and play with him. I'm in charge of baking and I usually make something with nuts (I love nuts), something without nuts (one niece is allergic) and something for the kids. This year it's pecan pie bars, apple pan dowdy, and madeleines (one kid loves these). Everyone else is a bit tired of pumpkin right now. Then I make everyone keep or take the remainders. My best advice is diet rules are prohibited, just enjoy a holiday devoted to cooking, baking and eating, and ignore anyone unpleasant; pretend phone calls and texts can be very helpful to walk away. Then, wake up and start planning for the December holidays. Stay informed on the news, but don't become obsessed, or fearful (these are non-productive emotions), and stay away from it completely if find yourself dwelling in negative feelings.
Well, so far while baking my pumpkin cheesecake yesterday the food processor died while I had the graham crackers in it. Had to dump them in zip lock and beat them with a meat tenderizer. Despite my best efforts the cheesecake ended up with a huge crack right down the middle.
Hoping today is a better day for the rest of the cooking. Oh, and my daughter is doing the mashed potatoes because for some strange reason I've never had luck mashing potatoes.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Baking Cranberry-Ginger Nantucket Pie and Pumpkin Pie bars today. Prepping dishes today to finish tomorrow. Just realized I forgot to get bread cubes so looks like I’ll be making my own.
Giving thanks to you for the smiles and the yums! (Made a Swedish Pear Square, for nibbling with coffee as we finish up cooking early tomorrow, but will put the tender pie crust on account for the Turkey Pot Pie this weekend!)
We may not all be able to have dinner together, but you’ll be with us in spirit as we serve your bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie- our son’s first time making it!

You just need laughter.
Happy TG to all.
Happy Thanksgiving Marissa! Here's how I deal with Thanksgiving...by making crab cakes, Cole slaw, cornbread, and pecan pie! No turkey here!
You are the smartest of all of us!!!
Either that or burgers on the grill!
That sounds so perfect!
