A former colleague just gave me her mother's shortbread mold. I am going to try it out this weekend. If it works, I'll share my first batch with her. If it doesn't, I'll adjust and try again.
I can’t wait to make your shortbread recipe. I am a long time visitor to Scotland’s Orkney where shortbread is always around. The brunch sounds easy and delicious. Our book club has chosen Yesteryear for this month. I’ll start it next week and let you know. Thank you for your recipes and voice.
Great review! Have you listened to author's podcast Diabolical Lies? She is great! (and grad of Bennington College, the inspiration for Donna Tartts' Secret History so I was an immediate fan).
Ive been using Good Reads for so long that I have avoided switching to StoryGraph. I know , I know...I should. Its not a great excuse but do you know if its possible to transfer any of the "shelves" created in Good Reads over ?
Actually, yes. I transferred my entire account - shelves, reviews, everything. It was super easy and they did most of the work for me. It is not nearly as satisfying to post there, honestly, as the community is so much smaller. But it gives me some small amount of satisfaction to change this one thing. Ya know? To do my small part to stick it to the oligarchs. 😜
Adding this to my shopping list immediately! Will be making (fingers crossed) with the wild raspberries that grow along our backyard. cant wait to try it with a cup of tea. Its the comforting type of treat I could use right now!
As far as Yesteryear goes...I have been choosing (without meaning to) books that tend to have unreliable, sometimes unhinged female main characters (think Yellow Face). In this case, Natalie is a little bit of both.. while she was hard like, she was well written.
The author is the host of Diaboloical Lies, a political (and cultural?) podcast so I was anxiously awaiting for this to finally hit the stands/airwaves. The audiobook was phenomenal...and I dont think I could have guessed the ending if I tried. I did hear there will be an adaptation-with Anne Hathaway producing and starring as the main character. I dont picture it.
I havent read that other book...but Ive started Go Gently, by Semple, the author of Where'd You Go Bernadette. I LOVE her writing and am enjoying it so far. What are you reading next?
Why are they called Ted Lasso? I haven't seen it, cuz don't watch Apple anything so wikipediaed it & read the premise...I guess it's one of those things "you had to be there"....lolololol.
I am guessing because in the series Ted brings his boss shortbread in a beautiful pink tin...and it becomes his "trademark" in a way? but i could be wrong!

I am so, so happy to have both recipes now 🩷🌸 I have been on the waiting list for weeks for Yesteryear, will report back!
Ladies and gents, the woman who made these recipes possible: THE Jen G!!!!
Ultimate life goal achieved to be featured on this substack!!
If I used up the Euro butter on shortbread, I’d need a divorce lawyer. Thanks!
This begs to be made. Older daughter coming tomorrow for a bit of surgery this week so will get this done while she’s here. I love good shortbread!!!
Hope she heals quickly! Shortbread will surely help you both!
Thanks!!!

Yesteryear. Holy crap! What a read!!! I don’t know if this will work, but here’s a link (I think) to my review on StoryGraph (a female-owned alternative to goodreads and the amazon stranglehold on books): https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/018be96d-e94b-4ecc-b872-3794e8a5fddd
And, I love shortbread. Love! 😋

Thanks for the shortbread recipe - AND the raspberry variation!

Pour the crumbs into prepared baking pan, and gently, like a wee kitten, press the dough evenly into the pan. 😽
