Rollllllllll Calllllll
This substack is home to the entire roll call from the DNC and a recipe, of course.
For all my readers who are supporters of the Harris-Walz ticket, maybe your family overruled you and insisted on watching something other than the Democratic National Convention last night. Perhaps you were on the top of the mountain peering into the night sky looking for meteors, or maybe you just went to bed early. For those of us who missed it, or just want another immersion into pure energy, humor, pride and music: The roll call of states from the Democratic National Convention.
I was in the first category, with a family that overruled my desire to watch the DNC, so I’m catching up this AM. If you haven’t seen Michelle and Barack Obama’s speeches, well, honey, do you have a treat in store.
And c/o of Yashar Ali’s threads feed, because I can’t seem to find it anywhere else easily, a little bit of charm and warmth from Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff’s son, about his dad. OMG. Watch it here.
If you need a little blueberry roly-poly to go with your roll-call, here’s a reminder of one of my favorite blueberry recipes from last year.
And hey! I’m from Jersey, and you’re not! *
*possibly, I mean, are you from Jersey? Garden State in the house?!
I'm retired and live alone with my cat (to the consternation of JD Vance), so I watched the DNC and it was electrifying. I tuned in a little after 6 pm CT because someone on Twitter had highly recommended listening to the roll call. I had really liked the roll call in 2020 but wasn't expecting much. It was so unifying and literally showed the diversity in the US and, unlike the RNC, it wasn't a bunch of mostly white dudes. The Blue dots in Red states showed so much enthusiasm; I'm a Blue dot in a Red state so I really relate to that. Someone on Twitter showed a side-by-side comparing the DNC roll call to the RNC roll call and it's very telling. And the speeches were great. I was reading with the convention streaming in the background but when the speeches began I was pulled into listening to them full-time. From Ana Navarro talking about what communism and authoritarianism is really like to Doug Emhoff's speech to the fantastic speeches of the Obamas, and yes, Michelle's speech was the best. I made your Blueberry Roly-Poly when you first put it on your Substack and it's one of my favorites. I'm making your cheesy zucchini bread today and then your blueberry-coconut cake this weekend. I'm on the autism spectrum and very much an introvert and it exhausted me just listening to the speakers and the crowd, but in a good way.
Garden State in the house over here! 🙋🏻♀️ I recommend watching the convention live or as a replay on Kamala Harris’s YouTube channel. No pundits, no commercials, and no distracting graphics on the screen.
