HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I've already saved this recipe but I'll be adding blueberries instead of raspberries (allergy). It sounds perfect with a cup of hot tea. I always have a German chocolate cake for my birthday and since I'm retired and live alone I do whatever I want for my birthday, depending on my mood. The cheesy Brazilian bread reminds me of Brazi Bites that I sometimes buy from Whole Foods but I have no doubt that the homemade version is so much better. They probably won't handcuff him but an indictment would be a fabulous present for the rule of law.
Omg, this is my favorite of all tea cakes. I remember eating it and whiling away hours at Scottish tea shops along the water serving this, with all the prams sitting outside in the rain.
Thank you. My sugar restrictions were to have started this week.... ha, maybe next week.
Happy b-day. Today is my b-day too. My favorite is Black Forest cake. I am thinking of taking a drive to the Swiss Bakery half an hour away to pick one up - but they may not have it b/c —- this is not long ago NJ when no respectable bakery would ever be w/out Black Forest cake. There’s even a German restaurant nearby that never has it. Strange days indeed.
Happy birthday to a fellow March 25th-er. I feel like you'd have luck finding Black Forest Cake at certain NJ Italian bakeries, like Calandra's or Natale's
People are just forgetting the taste of our old fashioned cakes in lieu of quick and easy! Sad, that unless we have old fashioned bakery around the corner they will never know what they are missing!
I grew up in a very Italian neighborhood although we are not Italian. Our bday cakes always came from the local bakery and were layer cakes filled with cannoli filling. Heaven! I dream about one now!
It’s so difficult to imagine anyone ever being unkind to you, Marissa, and it hurts my heart for you. You are filled with an abundance of love and goodness and an amazing sense of humor. You are vastly talented; I so enjoy receiving your posts, recipes, photos of your Bosco and Clyde, beautifully made goodies I can only dream of accomplishing. This comes from my heart with a big, sincere hug. I hesitate sending this because it seems so over the top, but it’s truly how I feel.
Thanks much. You, me, and Aretha March 25. I graduated from Rutgers - Newark. Loved Newark for the great food, Branchburg Park, music clubs - mostly gone and I worked in Millburn also great food all around. Unfortunately I now live in Northern VA after living in DC for 20+years. My friends wanted to take me for dinner. I declined b/c food here SUCKS. I haven’t been back in years. When I think of going back it scares me b/c the past is gone. And of course the famous quote: you can’t go back. Sometimes I hop in the car & go to The Swiss Bakery. It pales in comparison to the fabulous bakeries of my youth in North Jersey, the Bronx, Staten Island like everything: taken for granted.
Happy Birthday! Mine was last Sunday but since my older daughter and SnL had COVID we will celebrate tomorrow. She’s going to make my favorite orange chiffon cake for me. I was an angel food with chocolate ganache and raspberry coulli person for decades but just changed this year to anew favorite!
Happy birthday Marissa! This cake looks amazing and may all of your orange birthday wishes come true. ✨
Thank you!

Oh, so perfectly said! "A fabulous present for the rule of law." Lady Justice deserves some decent gifts.
Cherries and cherry jam would also make a good substitute. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Um, it's not that high in sugar...you can always leave out the jam? Um. Happy to find a fellow bakewell lover!

Happy birthday Marissa! What a fabulous cake. Hope Clyde didn’t eat too much 😀
Clyde is so finicky. He was just inspecting. Thank you for the birthday love!
Wish there was a laugh response on Substack 😂
Happy, happy birthday to you, Marissa! May your days (and nights) be filled with sweetness... xo

My mom loved orange chiffon too! But what a delish idea chocolate ganache and raspberry sauce. Love the raspberry-chocolate combo!
