I just had my 80th birthday and made myself a Guinness chocolate cake (Ottolenghi). It's the first thing I've baked since I broke my hip a few weeks ago, and I realized how much energy even a simple thing takes as I moved around my kitchen.

Jane, LOL, I just read your comment on making a Guinness Chocolate Cake after I posted my own comment --making a similar cake using a recipe from Tessa Arias (Handle the Heat). Best wishes for your 80th and for your recovery!

This reminds me so much of my grandmother's lemon cake that my mother made and my father decorated every Easter. He dyed coconut flakes green and circled the cake (made in a tube pan) with green "grass." Then he decorated the grass with with jelly beans. What a great memory.

Marissa: Gorgeous photos. Congratulations

Joyce: Is there a recipe for chocolate babka? I heard Andrew Weissmann’s went missing.

Baking = science + art + love.

Marissa, to my family's chagrin amd wonderment, I make my own birthday dinner *and* cake, and have the family over to enjoy each other's company. But I don't consider it a celebration -- a birthday is just another day to me.

Today, though, is my son's 46th birthday, and he is dealing with a very serious health issue, so we are definitely celebrating as a family. He's making dinner for all, and I'm making a Guiness Chocolate Cake with Bailey's Buttercream Frosting, a recipe I got from another author and made a few weeks ago. It was a huge hit, and my son requested it, so that's going in the oven this morning. Cheers!

Just a heartfelt thank-you for including metric measurements in your recipes. I no longer live in the US where I was raised and thus never learned the metric system. I could probably do the conversions myself but it's so nice when you put them in. It allows me to avoid the math, which I like to do since I cannot avoid politics. My birthday is months away but I got no cake last time so I'm gonna make this one and treat myself.

Thank you, Marissa. My tradition – which I have skipped the last several years – is to make my birthday cake – Bakers Sweet German Chocolate Cake! My favorite! But a very close second is a Sacripantina made by Stella Pastry & Cafe in North Beach, San Francisco.

The tradition in my family was to get a St. Honore cake from Victoria’s Pastry in North Beach!

My favorite birthday cake when I was a kid was an Angelfood cake drizzled with chocolate sauce.

I recently discovered the Guinness cake a couple folks have mentioned. It is delicious.

The lemon drizzle cake is beautiful and I think I’ll make one to counter the clouds, rain, and psychic doom.

It’s so refreshing to see Baker’s and artisans on these forums! If I have left Facebook and Instagram and I miss these kind of post so dearly… I’m going to try to make this lemon cake with gluten-free flour mix. I think it’ll work. I made the Moose wooden banana bread with the King Arthur gluten-free flour and it came out perfectly.

Thank you for the recipe! For my birthday, I try to take the days off before and after my birthday. I usually buy a vanilla cake with buttercream frosting at the grocer. I cook mushrooms, onions and broccoli in some red wine for supper. Then, I try to get to the beach each day if it's warm enough. I like to read a book at the beach and take a nap in between dunks in the water. I'll have to "practice" making your cake in time for my birthday. Thank you and Happy Birthday! 👏✨️👏

My 8x2 pan has been idle far too long-will use your suggested cake here as an inspiration to bring it out and enjoy baking once again. Thanks and good fortune and a pat on the back and belly with your new book .
