I was just finishing up my shopping list so I can bake cookies beginning tomorrow (snow and frigid cold coming) and stopped to read your email. I revised my list to include the ingredients I needed for your Chabon-bon bars. I have not had COVID but I'm anti-social, always wear a mask unless I'm outside alone, and got vaccinations and boosters but I'll pick up some Mentos just in case. I think you should get a hard pass on cooking a giant Christmas dinner this year as recompense for getting COVID and losing your senses of taste and smell. Why not get some hors d'oeuvres (frozen or locally made) and nibble. My daughter and I did this for Christmas and New Year's Eve for many years. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Your approach is right on every level! From mask-wearing to baking while the temperatures dip to Arctic. And: H'ors d dinner? That's like my dream dinner. If I blend your idea with Dawn Z's...think of this dream...h'ors d dinner in pajamas. Swoon. Perfect. I'm also considering taking out the raclette machine...that way everyone can cook their own...

How are YOU folks doing?

-- Is "meh" a status?

Did you take Paxlovid?

-- I've never had covid, nor do I plan to. It's too... people-y out there. And I do everything in my power to avoid... people. Subsequently this answers your next questions too.

Also: Do I have to cook a giant Christmas meal this year, or do I get a pass? Recommendations gratefully received.

--I suppose the positive of my lifestyle is I don't have to deal with making huge meals or what have you. I go to my dad's for a couple hours and come back to my "fur kids" and feed them whatever I take back with me.

Here's to hoping you get better soon and your taste/smell returns.

These were a HUGE hit in the cookie box I sent out.

Happy to hear you are over the Covid. Being in TX again is sort of scary as 98% of people are maskless. We have gone back to masking up after only being maskless a couple of days since we moved here in May. People look at us like we are aliens, but we don't care. 400 people are still dying per day from Covid. We don't want to catch it and nobody knows who has it and who doesn't. Btw, my girlfriend made the Pumpkin Apple Cake and we both liked it, which says a lot because i do not like pumpkin. I'll get back with you at some point about my Mac & Cheese recipe with the lobster, Jalapenos, bacon and 4 kinds of cheese. Ho ho ho, just not in the right mood at present. Thanks and have a jolly Christmas.

Hi, Marissa. As always, I love your commentary on all things baking, and now Covid. Glad you are on the mend. After two years of avoiding it, which included travel to Scotland & Puerto Rico (go figure!), it just found me in New Jersey so no holiday baking for me. Wishing you a happy & healthy New Year!

I, too, had Covid x 18 days from Thanksgiving weekend on. Will remember Mentoes if I ever must take Paxlovid again. Yes, I too had the rebound. Never occurred to me my 76 yrs gave me the rebound. I know a lung doctor who thinks we should maybe take Paxlovid longer and it might prevent the dreaded rebound. The shortbread sounds terrific! Thanks, Marissa, and stay well!

Apparently 10-days of Paxlovid may be the future of how it's taken, but it hasn't been tested properly (according to the pulmonologist I spoke with!). Thank you for the well wishes!

Love this recipe! And sorry about the Covid. I got it finally this summer a little more than a week before my son’s wedding, after going all that time being married to a physician who saw patients in a county hospital that were mostly positive (where the population is still only 50% vaccinated) and avoiding it. Paxlovid saved us, but I, too, had a rebound after being negative for a week (I have an autoimmune). My taste came back right away, but the nastiness of the Paxlovid mouth is something I won’t forget. Wish I knew about the Mentos. And NO you don’t have to do a big meal. Do what makes you happy, and no matter what you choose, don’t overwork yourself. Covid surprisingly sucks your energy right out of you for a bit. Maybe it’s a pajama holiday season?

Oh no! What a classic. No covid under the most challenging circumstances (not to mention how challenging it must have been for your husband to work with a community only 50 % vaccinated) ... and then...son's wedding. If I'm reading it right, you were well enough to go to the wedding before you had your rebound?

And as for pajama holiday season...I think you have just named our Christmas! Brilliant. Thanks. xo

Oh, yes, I was well for wedding and that was all that mattered. And a purposeful pajama holiday in my mind is the best thing ever! Enjoy!

Sorry you are feeling this well. For me, Paxlovid worked in 5 days. But I had a rebound infection. At 58 years, I think my age had something to do with the rebound. I hope you feel better very soon!

I think a rebound is a bit inevitable, the way it sounds, unfortunately. Blurgh. But thank you for the good wishes! Have a wonderful holiday!

Glad you're on the mend. A friend in Thailand who has an auto-immune disorder just caught covid for the first time and is in hospital, and Paxclovid isn't available apparently :(

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I hope they are on the mend very soon. Keep me posted.

I guess he's out of hospital because he just had to put one of his stallions down and was there to hold his head. After importing a team of vets a few months ago from Belgium to operate and remove the biggest melanomas they'd ever seen, the one melanoma they couldn't excise put too much pressure on the siatic nerve and the horse was unable to stand up. So he's not worrying about his own problems too much at the moment :(

So sorry you caught the covid crud. Sounds like your friend had the sweetest idea! Hubby and I have both had it a few times. Thankfully I only tried to cough up a lung. He lost taste for a few days, but no lasting effects. And yes - you definitely get a pass on cooking Christmas dinner! Chinese is always open! Hope you feel better soon!

I knew you guys would have my back on Christmas dinner! Thank you! xo
