We just got back from the Azores, and on the island of Terceira a very popular dish called Alcatra is slow-cooked in a clay pot in the oven, and brought to your table still in the pot. A key seasoning is whole allspice. We thought they were peppercorns at first! I bought a clay pot and have been making it at home.

Thank you for the history lesson and the beautiful pictures. Interesting, because I was shopping a couple of days ago and decided that what was left of my ground allspice was probably old so I bought a new jar. Karma!

Allspice is what gives Swedish meatballs their unique taste and smell. If you wander into Meatballs for the People on Södermalm in Stockholm on a winter's evening you are immediately embraced by a welcoming fug of warm allspice-scented air that is an aperitif all by itself.

I not only use allspice in my wet jerk marinade but also in my chili which is a riff on Cincinnati chili.

Well, golly, I always wondered why it was called allspice. Aren’t you just full of interesting information. We live a spicy pumpkin pie, so I use it in that, but also in apple pie (which we also like a bit spicy). It’s good the stone fruit pies also.
