For some unknown and I remembered reason I *have* Lyle's syrup in my pantry. 😊 My problem is, I read a great recipe - with obscure ingredients, then excitedly order said obscure recipe necessaries, and by the time it (or they) arrive, I forget what recipe it's for! So - I *have* Lyle's syrup! I just don't know how or when to use it! 😊❤️
I started using it for lots of things. Also I came across a recipe for making it yourself, if you can't get it. Now 2 stores in my out of the way, semi rural corner of WA state carry it.
Pi Day is pretty much sacred in my kitchen too but somehow I usually forget that it's coming until the day of or close to it and have to just wing it with whatever I have on hand. My go-to has become a Shepherd's pie abberation composed of leftovers in a pie dish topped with instant mashed potatoes. Which does sound unappealing, but sometimes it really works.
😂 @DebC in Kentucky - Kentucky is where I would be! I can go to Hawaii to my hubby’s family home anytime. BUT Kentucky is where I was raised & my only immediate family left? My 2 older sisters’ plus my best friend since High School (50 years of best friendship💕) I would love to spend Pi day at my sisters place with pie & homemade ice cream!!
Delicious desert with my close family - or I could go to PA to spend time with my grandkids - but I visit them already yearly.
Nothing like sitting on the front porch of a Southern home in the spring eating pie and ice cream with your best friend and family ♥️♥️♥️
I haven't been able to find Lyle's (St Louis county) but I also haven't scoured all the grocery stores. It's on my Amazon "to order" list since it's come up in other recipes I've saved. I'm a retired academic of more than 35 years, and never once took off for Spring Break. There were many reasons, my daughter's Spring Break almost never coincided with mine, I had to use the time to catch up with grading and get ready for finals, and as an Associate Dean for more than 25 years the work didn't stop during Spring Break. But, if I could've taken off I'd have gone to Montreal. I love this city, the people, the food, the culture, the old and the newness of it all.
I found Lyle’s listed as available at World Market. Others may have the same luck. As far as where I would magically transport for Spring break, you would find me on the beach at the Sunshine Shack in Anguilla.
I'm a teacher and live in Florida. Spring break heaven is a week off, at home, with nothing to do and no whiny students 😀 they don't seem to realize we want the break as much as they do!
I’m in the Metro DC area snd there are store with an international section. I have seen Lyle’s Golden Syrup there on occasion. Also this place in NoVA is geared up for online sales. https://vienna-shop.square.site/
I just found a European store near me that might carry it. When I was young, I was too poor to go anywhere but home, and find a temporary job over spring break to make a few dollars. But, if I could have, I'd pick a quiet island in the Caribbean with crystal clear blue water and tropical fish swimming around...or even my quiet hometown in Ohio.
We usually keep Lyle’s on hand, as Lara has fond memories of it from her childhood in Fiji. Last time I needed it (to make your chocolate bourbon pecan pie) I had to order a 4-pack of it from Amazon because my local World Market was out. On the bright side, now I have several collectible tins, I guess… 🤣 🦁🍯
Provence, France--specifically Bandol. Spring break, fall break, summer vacation--any time.
Regarding Golden Syrup, I have a bottle in my pantry right now. I like to bake British treats, and lots of those recipes call for it. It is also critical to Nigella Lawson's Christmas Rocky Road, which I make every year.
Pi Day is always key lime pie, except I make it with yuzu juice. I use Smitten Kitchen's recipe with 3 egg yolks (I tried more one time, but I could taste the eggs, and I don't like the taste of eggs, so back to 3). It's the easiest, fastest pie to make, and I always seem to be busy in March. The yuzu juice makes it over the top delicious. file:///Users/mx/Pictures/Photos%20Library.photoslibrary/resources/derivatives/0/0F7C2882-5F3E-46EB-9C96-5511C97F49DC_1_105_c.jpeg

David Leibovitz has a recipe for Anzac biscuits I think, and Deb from Smitten Kitchen might use it in her flapjacks?

Last week I was reading Anne Byrn's newsletter about meatloaf (https://open.substack.com/pub/annebyrn/p/a-more-perfect-and-never-boring-meatloaf?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=kg5g) and what she said about cooking it free-form producing more delicious browning suddenly made me wonder why I'd never baked a meatloaf in my cast iron skillet then topped it with mashed potatoes and now I know what I'm doing for Pi Day this year.

I found Lyle’s Golden Syrup at World Market!
You might have asked in the poll if we can find it locally. I can't find it locally, but found it readily on the dreaded Amazon.
As did I

Southern Portugal would be nice.
